why It works….

Playing in groups encourages people to continue playing music – quite possibly the most important thing of all.

We welcome students from outside of Mosaic to join us in our unique and fun, monthly Group Classes!

We value the Group Class experience and the opportunity for learning as much as giving private lessons. In Group playing we learn to listen to others while playing. People learn to follow a leader and be a leader. Sharing music, musical games and socializing keeps music from being something one always does alone. (*sad face!)

Our unique format
We differ from other Suzuki-oriented studios in how we implement group learning. We have a unique approach called “Group Class Week.” There are no private lessons during Group Class Week. Instead, students come to the class(es) of their choice and appropriate to their ability level. Your teacher can assist in choosing if needed.

Group Class participation is required of all students enrolled at MSA (except adult students).

We have fun while we learn!
Group playing is key to musical development. Our Group Classes are customized for students of all ages and ability levels. Classes are taught by Academy teachers in their areas of expertise and interest. Small class sizes, similar ages and ability levels, as well as consistent classmates will help create the best possible environment for a successful group experience.

Our 100+ Academy students from all over the Portland area join together in rehearsals and performances. During group class students learn from one another and explore music from all around the world. this helps us understand different cultures and back grounds.

Class repertoire is exciting & relevant, spans from historic to modern and often includes music from every continent. Past class choices include various Fiddle styles,Mariachi, Cinema, Pop Music, Chamber Music, Asian Folk Music, Songwriting, Electric Strings, Applicable Music Theory, Story Telling, Baroque Music, Video Game Theme Music & our Senior Showcase piece…..SO EXCITING! The list continues to grow!

We prepare for Performance!
Performance preparation requires a special kind of focus & listening. The stage is hallowed ground. Motivation is built in. Collaboration is a must. Encouragement, excitement and support is key. Performance skills are unique. The rewards and life skills are valuable. Group Classes puts on two of our infamous Epic Group Class Concerts per year.

How It works

  • There are 2 sessions of Group Classes: Oct-Jan & Feb-June.

  • There are 2 EPIC GROUP CLASS CONCERTS! January & June. See schedule for concert dates.

  • Attendance at Group Class is mandatory because everyone is important in our musical arrangements.

  • Group classes take a break during summer.

  • There are no private lessons during Group Class Week.

  • Students sign up in advance for class(es) of their choice and appropriate to their ability level.

  • Students may change classes each session but not within a session.

  • Students are expected to come prepared for each class. Your private teacher will support the learning during lessons.

  • MSA students can sign up for as many classes as they want at no extra cost. Yay!
